What is Reiki, and why the heck do you need it?
Simply put: Reiki is a hands on, Japanese healing practice.
Think back to when you were 5 years old; you fell and scraped your knee. The tears well up in your eyes, mama is nowhere to be seen. You curl up with your knees to your chest, as the tears spill out down your cheek. You take your hands over your scrape to make it feel better. Mama sees you and embraces you.
Now, you are 11 years old, you just slammed your finger in the car door when your adolescent hormones took over and slammed the door. Instinctually, you grab your finger with the other hand, soothing the crushing, pulsating feeling. Fast forward and you are 22 in your first apartment cooking stovetop Ramen Noodles.
You scald your forearm in the steam reaching over the pot. After a choice word or two, you grasp your arm, rocking yourself back and forth. Hands on healing is as instinctual to humans as breathing and dates back thousands of years.
What the heck IS Reiki and how DOES it work?!
Made up of two words, Rei meaning Universal and Ki meaning life force energy. This gentle form of energy work helps to heal the body, mind and spirit, and bring them back into balance. In a Reiki session, the practitioner gently places hands on the recipient, or holds the hands just above the body, to facilitate moving stuck, stagnant or imbalanced energy through the body.
A trained practitioner is “attuned” to the energy always flowing in us, through us, and around us. As they use the unlimited amount of energy in the atmosphere, they can help flow the energy to and through you. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion, and it is deemed safe for babies, children, and adults alike.
What is Reiki like?
The seven main energy centers, or chakras, in the body that run from the base of the spine up to the crown of the head are the focus of a Reiki energy session. As the practitioner begins at your crown and works their way down the chakras, you are likely to feel many things! Some of the things people experience during a Reiki session are peace, “buzzing”, warmth, coolness, pulsating, visions, even bliss.
Not only is a Reiki session an hour of uninterrupted relaxation, it can also help you process emotion, release unhelpful baggage stored in the body, and aid in supporting physical healing. Reiki is truly a healing art that connects the mind, body and spirit.
As one chakra is overactive, often times felt as warmth to a practitioner, the next may be underactive, felt often as coolness. An energy block in one area may result in a lack of flow of energy to the next chakra. And vice versa, if there is an overflow of energy in one area, the energy will seem to only trickle out to the remaining chakras.
Don’t be alarmed! No person is ever fully balanced in their life, much as no person will ever have completely balanced chakras. Someone with an overactive heart or fourth chakra (think: always giving of themselves to others), may very well have a very underactive solar plexus (third chakra, associated with personal power) or throat (fifth chakra, associated with speaking our truth). As a practitioner begins to flow the Reiki energy, more balance starts to come into the chakras.
So, is Reiki ‘One and done’?
When it comes to Reiki, no two people will ever be the same, not even you! From day to day, our energy is shifting, always changing. What we are feeding our energy into is changing, what is demanding our energy, our emotions, our physical state and health, are also always changing. Reiki is something that can benefit you every day, every week, every month.
But because our bodies are always shifting in so many different ways, Reiki is not like going to the dentist once a year for a good cleaning. With good, regular upkeep through Reiki healing sessions, you will find that your mind is clearer and more at ease, the body is lighter and feels healthier, your emotions, once heavy like fog, now are like passing clouds in the sky. In the case of Reiki, more is more. Have you also seen these bracelets around? This is known as a “chakra bracelet” which harnesses the energy of stones and crystals to balance your chakras.
It all sounds a little looney, is it too good to be true?
Reiki, energy, chakras…these are all things that we cannot see, but if we are open to them, we can EXPERIENCE them. Like a soft breeze on your face, a sweet melody in your ear, faith in a higher power, we can’t see these things either, but we know and believe they exist. When we surrender to believing without seeing, the looney-tune veil falls away from such things as these.
But, if you are more of a I-need-to-see-it-to-believe-it kind of person, then here is an interesting factoid. Major hospitals all over the country are implementing Reiki services and practitioners into their alternative healthcare offerings. Hospitals such as John’s Hopkins Hospital in Maryland, Yale- New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Rhode Island, and Stanford Medical Center in California, along with many others (over 800 country wide), now offer Reiki healing to patients.
Studies have even been conducted on the effectiveness of Reiki in hospital settings, as well. Better sleep, and reduced pain, nausea and anxiety were among some of the benefits noted in the studies. So, there you have it, science-minded folks, Reiki is scientifically proven to be a safe and efficient alternative healing method.

Albert Einstein famously equated that E=MC2. In less science-y terms, all things are energy, energy is everywhere. By tapping into this unlimited supply of energy around us, we have an unlimited healing potential in Reiki. Our minds can be clearer, we can be emotionally freer, our bodies can feel healthier. Now Reiki sounds Ah-Mazing, right?! What’s the next step, you ask? Find a certified Reiki practitioner near you and schedule yourself an hour of relaxation, bliss-filled, energy healing! You won’t regret it. Promise!
