Protein is an organic compound that is essential for our body to function.

Adding plant based protein powder into your supplement regimen is a great idea for anyone that is active or following a vegetarian or vegan diet.

But it’s also a great alternative to get your daily protein without eating meat!

Until the last few years when the plant-based protein powder industry exploded, most of us were supplementing with protein powders containing whey or casein.

In fact, it was a pretty common belief that you could only get all your amino acids from an animal source, but luckily many brands out there have proved that theory wrong and have been able to create amazing blends that are 100% plant-based and even taste delicious.  A great bonus for us as consumers is that these companies tend to be more health conscious so you’ll often see additional bonus ingredients featuring exotic superfoods, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

There are easily over 50 brands on the shelves these days, so I’m going to take the guess work out for you and make it super easy to narrow down to the best choices out there. People are very opinioned about their protein powders so take a look at this guide and choose wisely, but make sure you save your receipt😊.

1. Vega Sport Performance Protein

I’ve been a huge fan of Vega for over a decade because of the story behind the brand. Brendan Brazier, author of the book Thrive and creator of Vega, was a former professional Ironman triathlete and two-time Canadian 50km Ultra Marathon Champion. At the time, there weren’t any plant-based protein powders on the market, so he created one. Since then, the brand has exploded so definitely check out their other products. One serving has 30 grams of protein and the sources are pea, alfalfa, pumpkin and sunflower. The flavor choices of mocha, chocolate, vanilla and berry taste sweet and the texture is smooth. And additional ingredients offer a boost such as turmeric and tart cherry, which are well known for naturally lowering inflammation.

2. Orgain Organic Protein Plant-Based Powder

For similar benefits but a lower impact on your budget, I love recommending Orgain to clients. As the #1 selling vegan plant-based protein powder on Amazon, you can’t go wrong with either Creamy Chocolate Fudge or Vanilla Bean as both have a cleaner taste and make your fruit smoothies be not too sweet. This organic blend includes protein sources from brown rice, chia, hemp and pea, has 21 grams of protein per serving and features monkfruit and rosemary extract for an antioxidant boost. I love the fact that this company was founded by a doctor who was diagnosed with cancer and couldn’t find any plant-based proteins on the market that had clean ingredients. If you’re super busy or find yourself skipping meals, then grab some of their individual ready-to-drink protein shakes so you always have something on hand.

3. The Natural Citizen Organic Protein Powder

Although this brand is one of the newest to enter the plant-based scene, it definitely knocks it out of the park in regards to my research for all things with super clean ingredients.  I had a chance to interview Angela Hein, who co-created The Natural Citizen with Nadia Velazquez to find out what makes this plant-based protein powder so unique among a sea of many.

This is what she said: “The simple answer is quality and versatility. We use only four whole food ingredients and no added flavors or sweeteners. With only four ingredients, we can meticulously oversee sourcing so we can test every ingredient multiple times throughout the supply chain. Since our products are unflavored and unsweetened, you can add them to anything – oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, pancakes, etc. Our plant protein is going to be surprisingly smooth because we use mostly brown rice and hemp instead of pea, which is a great protein-rich ingredient, but it tends to have a gritty texture and aftertaste.” Each serving provides 15 grams of protein and the organic sources are hemp, brown rice, pea and sacha inchi.

4. Genesis Today Plant Based Vega Protein and Greens

I’ve been recommending this brand for years and was super pumped when they launched this protein powder last year. With two toddlers, it is a constant struggle to make sure they’re getting enough servings of fruits and veggies daily, and this is my go-to protein powder when making their smoothies. Along with 20 grams of organic protein sourced from pea, brown rice, sacha inchi and hemp, each scoop provides two servings of green, leafy vegetables including broccoli, spinach and kale. I also recommend this for non-toddlers who don’t get the recommended 5-13 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

5. Garden of Life Raw Protein Powder

Among the thousands of natural products brands, Garden of Life has and continues to top the charts in regards to offering the highest quality supplements and addressing a variety of needs. I love this protein powder because it’s raw and it delivers 17 grams of protein from an organic blend of nine sprouted sources of protein. Offering high quality, plant-based protein plus live probiotics and enzymes, fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients such as Beta-glucans, SOD, glutathione and CoQ10, it really is a great protein powder to support overall health and vitality.
