Say hello to Carolina Calderon, our #SpringIntoYogaLifestyles challenge winner. After beautifully completing our April challenge with her amazing cat, Yoga Lifestyles had a couple of questions for her:
YOGA LIFESTYLES: First of all, congratulations on being the challenge winner! Do you have anything inspirational that you would like to share with the yoga community?
Carolina: Sure, I would like to share how yoga teaches me everyday to stay strong, not only physically, but mentally too. I need the spiritual strength to fight cancer with my mom. She has endometrial cancer and she’s been fighting for about two years. Right now, she’s in Argentina to do her treatment because my dad is working there and she needs him to feel better. At the same time, she needs us too, so being here in Miami with my daughter and wanting to be there with my mom is hard. Since day one, yoga has been my shelter, my guru, my time to pray, practice and learn. It makes me thankful and grateful for what I have.
I’m so sorry to hear that, please believe that everything will be okay. How long have you been practicing yoga?
I’ve been practicing yoga for about 2 or 3 years #everydamnday [lol]. I could never get bored of yoga, there’s so many poses to learn!
How did you get started?
I started with videos at home, like workout videos on YouTube. But then, luckily, they added yoga classes at my gym and that’s how everything started.
You know how it is, when you’re interested in something, you start looking for it. Since then, I’ve felt motivated to practice every morning before starting the day. I don’t exactly know how I ended up doing yoga challenges on Instagram, though.
What do you enjoy about yoga?
What I love about yoga is the journey; learning how to let things go and let things happen. And savasana of course, feeling the relaxation and peace at the end of class is priceless.
Agreed. What does the term “yoga” mean to you?
Yoga, to me, means to connect with our true self, you’re own universe. There’s so much going on inside us that we don’t know how to canalize that energy and yoga helps a lot!
What advice would you give to the yoga beginners?
My advice to them is to be patient. Don’t rush, don’t feel frustrated. Honor, love and respect your body.
Tell us about your cat, your cat is always with you doing yoga. 🙂
Chanchi (Piggy) is an amazing yoga cat. Every morning when he sees the mat he gets ready and comfortable there. He’s 13 years old and lovely with me but grumpy with every other human. I got him when he was a baby and since then we’re always together.
