5 Step Ayurvedic Guide to Fall Cleansing

Often we treat our bodies like a hardy piece of machinery that doesn’t require much care outside of occasional maintenance. Once a year, we proclaim that it’s time to prioritize our health and wellness. Whether we stick to a New Year’s resolution or not, one check-in per year is simply not enough.

The body, mind, and spirit need constant maintenance. Ayurveda recognizes the peaks and valleys of our physical and emotional health and empowers us to support our overall wellness through various lifestyle practices.

Seasonal changes prompt many shifts

With the change of seasons, we experience variations within our bodies and minds. This Ayurvedic cleanse is the perfect opportunity to de-fog your lense and move into the winter season with oiled gears. These 5 steps to increase vitality and ease throughout the colder months will do wonders for instilling excellent habits you can carry with you forever.

1. Create a morning routine

Start by working to enhance the experience of your morning routine. Make your bed each and every morning. Allow yourself to register the gratitude associated with sleeping in a safe and warm environment.

Next, carry that feeling of gratitude throughout the act of brushing your teeth. Use the time to think of 3 things you’re grateful for, and write them down in a unique gratitude journal. Give yourself a few reasons to smile first thing in the morning.

As the temperature cools, our bodies often start to secrete more mucus and suffer from poor circulation. This manifests through a drippy nose, wet coughing, stuffy sinuses, and cold fingers and toes.

Golden Milk (aka Turmeric Tea) is an ancient drink to relieve many ailments and support immune functioning.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups of cashew milk
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp of raw honey
  • Pinch of ground black pepper
  • Fresh ginger root (1 inch, peeled and chopped)

Instructions

  1. Add honey into a small saucepan on low heat.
  2. Combine turmeric and cinnamon with honey and whisk until fully blended and homogenous (2-3 minutes).
  3. Add cashew milk into a saucepan and continue to whisk (2-3 minutes).
  4. Pour into a cup and enjoy!

Substitutions:

  • Milk: whole milk, coconut, oat, etc.
  • Honey: maple syrup or agave
  • Cinnamon: pumpkin spice
  • Ginger: ¼ tsp of ginger powder

Dosha Considerations

  • Vata: whole milk
  • Pitta: coconut milk
  • Kapha: almond milk and add additional raw ginger

3. Kitchari cleanse

Cleansing supports the body in many ways. As we move into the cold and flu season, it is crucial to support the immune system.

Eating simply allows the digestive system to heal, which contributes to the strength of our overall immunity. Make it your goal to eat only Kitchari (an Ayurvedic mung bean porridge) 2-3 days a month.

4. Sweat

Exercise, especially yoga, is quite effective in strengthening the body and mind. Sweating is essential for an Ayurvedic cleanse. But the primary goal is to reduce stress.

30 minutes of sweat-induced movement each day will benefit the body, the gut, the immune system, and the mind.

5. Eat according to your dosha

According to Ayurveda, the true marker of health and wellness stems from the integrity of the gut. Eating what’s fresh and available during the individual seasons is necessary in order to pacify the doshas.

Vata: Increase your consumption of dense, heavy, moist, and well-cooked foods.

Eat oatmeal with whole milk, stewed fruits, soups, and crock-pot meals (chili, chowders, and bisques). Also incorporate baked root vegetables (sweet potatoes, beets, leeks), rice dishes, eggs, yogurt, ghee, squash, avocado, soft cheese.

Pitta: Eat lighter, less dense, moderately oiled foods.

Try oatmeal with nut milk, soups and crockpot meals (pho, minestrone, chicken noodle soup, curry, Thai coconut soup),  yogurt, eggs, baked vegetables, dark leafy greens, bitter foods, ghee, squash, avocado, soft cheese.

Kapha: Increase lightly oiled foods with heating spices.

Add oatmeal with water, soups and crockpot meals (bone broth, mung bean soup, ramen, vegetable stock, chicken soup), zucchini, wild rice, bell peppers, dark leafy greens, radishes, sprouts, spaghetti squash, butternut squash, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha to your diet.

This Ayurvedic cleanse will certainly help ease you into the winter months and may just instill some new habits and diet shifts that will benefit you for life.
