When a cat is pleasantly purring, arching its back, it is already reminiscent of yoga. The Homeward Bound animal shelter in Decatur, Illinois came to the same conclusion, and decided to send six adult cats for joint lessons with yoga students at Connie’s Yoga studio.
The idea came after shelter’s volunteer Jeanette Skaluba made a video of 12-year-old cat Oreo riding on her shoulders during exercises and it went viral. Jeanette explains the clip’s popularity by the fact that cats rule the Internet. She also expressed hope that it will encourage people to adopt more cats from animal shelters.
Oreo and its fellow shelter residents walk around the studio rubbing against the yoga practitioners during the class. One cat named Breezy spotted a warm place directly on the mat of a student, making her hold the pose until Breezy decided to move away.
Thanks to the presence of cats in a yoga class, people get the opportunity to interact with the animals outside the shelter
