You’ve heard about antioxidants, antioxidants’ benefits and know they’re important if you’re trying to live a healthier lifestyle.

And with all the food labels out there claiming to be antioxidant-rich this and antioxidant-packed that… it’s easy to wonder if they’re a new “fad” or if they’ve been right under your nose  this whole time.

Surprise, surprise! They are easier to find than you think.

We’ve all heard the rule-of-thumb to eat more fruits and vegetables but there’s a reason these foods get most of the credit for a healthy body. Fruits and vegetables, along with a few other food groups, contain antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances that inhibit oxidation. This means they help in the prevention of cellular damage.

Antioxidants Benefits

Our bodies are incredible and, when given the right antioxidants, interact with free radicals to terminate the damaging effects of these unpaired electrons. These free radicals are formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules causing a chain reaction of cellular damage. To help prevent the body from damages, our bodies need more antioxidants that are found in a lot of foods you already consume!

1. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that protects against toxins such as premenstrual syndrome, certain diseases and diabetes. You can find vitamin E in nuts, seeds, peanut butter, spinach and broccoli – just to name a few.

2. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. It helps boost the immune system, heal wounds and maintain the cartilage, bones and teeth. Whether you have a cold or you want to boost your system, there are many fruits and vegetables you can eat to get the same benefits as orange juice. Find vitamin C in bell peppers, dark green vegetables such as kale or spinach, kiwi, broccoli, strawberries and tomatoes.

3. Beta-Carotene

Beta-Carotene is a naturally occurring pigment found in plants. It’s recognized by its vibrant color such as the orange in carrots. It also is known as a precursor to vitamin A to help maintain healthy skin and eye health. You may have been told that eating carrots will help with eyesight and that’s because of the beta-carotene! Find this vitamin in sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach and cantaloupe.

4. Glutathione

Glutathione, also known as the “master antioxidant” is found in every single cell. It has a unique ability to maximize performance of all the other antioxidants. Luckily, this antioxidant helps to protect your cells and prevent damage to them. To get more of this amazing benefit, eat cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, garlic and grass-fed meat.

5. Reservatrol

Resveratrol aids in cellular support to improve mental function, muscle health and reduces oxidative stress. If you enjoy a glass of red wine, then resveratrol will help with that! You can also find it in peanuts, blueberries and grapes. So consume resveratrol and lower that blood pressure!

6. Epigallocatechin Gallate

Epigallocatechin Gallate, or EGCG, is a powerful antioxidant that is found in green tea. It prevents various diseases, helps improve brain functions, contains caffeine and increases fat burn. Green tea, which is delicious by itself or mixed with other powerful antioxidants in organic detox teas is a craze right now but for good reasons! It’s a simple way to boost your antioxidant intake as well as all of the added benefits.
